ANC wins 4 wards in by-elections

THE ANC won four wards out of six in municipal ward by-elections, the Independent Electoral Commission said

The two remaining seats went to the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Voter turnout varied between 55.28% and 24.4% with an average of 35.81%, the IEC said.

By-elections were held in Senqu (Lady Grey) in Eastern Cape, Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, Nongoma in KwaZulu-Natal, Polokwane in Limpopo, Ditsobotla (Lichtenburg) in North West, and Cape Town in Western Cape.

The African National Congress retained its seats in Senqu, Ekurhuleni, Polokwane and Ditsobotla.

The IFP retained its seat in Nongoma and the DA won a ward in Cape Town from the ANC.

The DA said it was delighted with the results, as it had won a ward in Cape Town and increased its share of the vote in two other wards.

It was the first time the DA had won ward 88 in Cape Town, which included the areas of Mitchells Plain and Philippi.

Results in Ekurhuleni and Polokwane, where the DA had grown its share of the vote to 14.92% and 17.31% respectively, showed more voters were choosing the party.
