A fight broke out during lunch break at school
A 17-year-old boy is being held in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 21-year-old man outside a school in Kagiso.
Khotso Modise, 21, died on the scene on Monday after allegedly attempting to protect his 17-year-old brother against his attacker.
The fight between the two Grade 11 boys from a local high school started during lunch break when the suspect, who was sitting with a group of friends, threw a stone and hit Thato Modise.
Thato allegedly wanted to know who had thrown the stone and then swore at them.
Later in class the suspect allegedly threatened to seek Thato out after school. Thato called his brother and asked him to escort him home. The fight outside the school premises allegedly started when Khotso arrived and tried to intervene.
Thato said he saw the suspect drawing a knife and charging at his brother.
"I did not realise he had been stabbed. I carried Khotso for a few metres and he collapsed. I ran home to tell my parents. My mother fainted when she heard what happened," said Thato.
His uncle, Martin Modise, said: "Khotso was looking forward to celebrating his 21st birthday on Sunday and instead will be buried on that day".
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Solly Sibiya said the deceased was stabbed once in the upper body and died on the scene.
"The suspect is said to have fled the scene after the incident but was later found at the Leratong Hospital. He had sustained a stab wound in the left shoulder and was receiving stitches," Sibiya said.
The suspect was arrested and was to apply for bail in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court yesterday. But the case was postponed. "The senior prosecutor was not satisfied with the information in the docket and asked for further investigation before the case could be placed on the roll," prosecutor Engela Lizette Welgemoed said.
Gauteng department of education spokesman Charles Phahlane said the fight took place outside the school premises and the department was in the process of getting full details.
"We condemn the carrying of weapons on school premises," Phahlane said.
