Tops at London science event

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Palesa Masuku went to a London science fair hoping to impress the judges - and she did.

Masuku, Nicholas Popich and Yuvika Singh were invited to the London International Youth Science Forum last month to present projects. They attended the event after their success at the finals of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists held in October last year.

Masuku, pictured, was the overall winner of the Eskom Special Awards at the national finals.

From August 16 to 31, Masuku competed against 1852 pupils from more than 50 countries and was among the top 20.

She used dried Morula pips as a source of energy.

"I took dried seeds from a Morula tree, put them in a tin and on the fire for 30 minutes. The result is charcoal, which maintains heat for about two hours," she said.

Her place in the top 20 earned her another all-expenses paid trip to London next August as a coordinator at the forum.

"Coming in the top 20 made me feel very privileged and proud since there were so many people with great ideas," Palesa said.
