Granny rapist arrested in prison

He was there for another crime

THE man suspected of raping an 82-year-old grandmother in Swayimane, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has been arrested in the Durban Westville Prison — after being arrested for a separate crime.

The 27-year-old man, was arrested on 16 August, after robbing a man from his cell phone in Durban.

“He appeared in court but was remanded in Westville Prison for further investigations. Upon investigating detectives were able to link him to the rape of an 82-year-old Swayimane granny,” said police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

The woman was raped last month, a week after a 94-year-old woman was raped in the same village, allegedly by a 28-year-old man who was released on President Jacob Zuma’s prisoner remission programme.

Khulekani Ndlela, has already appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court for the rape of the 94-year-old woman, where he was denied bail. His trial will resume from the Pietermaritzburg High Court on October 15 to October 19.

Naicker said they were positive that they have the right man for the rape of the 82-year-old woman.

“We can’t name the suspect until he is formally charged. But detectives are positive that he is the same person wanted for the alleged rape of a grandmother,” he said.
