Testing station boss is facing 820 charges of fraud and a further 820 involving alleged contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act

THE senior traffic officer of the Thulamela municipality in Limpopo, who was arrested last week on fraud charges, has been granted bail.

Thilivhali Mulaudzi, the municipality's head of traffic, was released on R20,000 bail by the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Mulaudzi, 48, was arrested on July 30 for over 1,640 cases - 820 of fraud and a further 820 charges involving contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act.

Mulaudzi was the sectional head of the Thulamela municipality's testing station in 1998 when the Department of Roads and Transport ordered the station to be closed after investigations revealed several malpractices which amounted to unlawful acts.

Investigations into his activities, where he allegedly issued fraudulent driver's licences to unsuspecting applicants, started in 2002.

Police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said a special investigation unit's report which was forwarded to the office of the director for public prosecutions, coupled with the recommendation from the office of the auditor-general, had led to the issuing of a warrant of arrest.

"No one is above the law and the Hawks' claws are out for all corrupt people irrespective of their stature in societies," he said.

He said Mulaudzi would appear again in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on August 22.
