THE discovery of textbooks at a dumping site in Limpopo has prompted the intensification of investigations into the matter by police and the provincial department of education.

About 5,000 books were found dumped in Majeje village near Phalaborwa on Monday. It was the third incident where books were found dumped under mysterious circumstances.

In June books were found being shredded while others were burnt in Seshego. Last month another pile of books were found dumped near Nsami Dam in Giyani. An education department official was arrested for allegedly dumping the books. Glen Kubayi, 44, is out on R2000 bail and will appear again in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on September 5.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said yesterday they had intensified the search for those dumping the books. "We . hope that the perpetrators would shed light as to what led to their actions," she said.

Department of Basic Education spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said he hoped police would speed up their investigations to ensure that those responsible were dealt with.
