Aids care-givers trash Gauteng Health HQ

Hundreds of HIV/Aids lay counsellors this morning trashed the head office of the Gauteng Health department after 'promises that they would be paid have not been met'.

They arrived at 7 am in the morning, but reacted in frustration when no-one from the department came to address their concerns, according to Jack Bloom, DA MPL.

Bloom said he saw an overturned security gate and broken pot plants with soil on the floor.

There were about 300 protesters, and police were called to maintain order.

After a mass demonstration last week the department had promised to pay them money owing for four months, but insisted that they sign contracts with NGOs in order to receive the monthly their monthly R1,500 stipend, he said in a statement.

"It is very regrettable that this trashing occurred, but this whole matter has been badly handled by the department. These lay counsellors perform valuable work and need to be treated with dignity instead of ignored."
