Nzimande faces lawsuit

In two weeks' time Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande will be taken to court by the Central University of Technology (CUT) after he placed the institution under administration.

Nzimande recently dissolved the council, as recommended by assessor Professor Julian Smith, and appointed Professor Stanley Ridge to take over CUT.

But the institution is not taking it lying down. The institution decided to challenge the ministry in court. Smith was appointed for 15 days and was paid R75,000 to investigate allegations of maladministration, corruption and denigration of human rights by Professor Thandwa Mthembu.

Smith recommended that Mthembu be placed on special leave pending an investigation; the institution's council be dissolved and an administrator appointed while a new council was selected.

Smith said he found evidence of mismanagement, intimidation of staff, unfair labour practices and financial mismanagement, among other things.

He also found that Nzimande was misled about the KPMG report that was shelved by the university and a subsequent one by Advocate Jannie Lubbe.

CUT is one of seven higher education institutions to be placed under administration.

The court case has been set for July 19 in the Bloemfontein High Court. - monamat@sowetan.co.za
