RAF gives pay-out to MEC accident victim

The R870,000 payout will be used to cover his hospital bill

Thomas Ferreira, who was seriously injured last year in a crash with a government vehicle, has been given an interim payout of R870,000 by the Road Accident Fund, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

Ferreira, 19, was hit by a vehicle linked to Gauteng MEC for local government and housing Humphrey Mmemezi and was brain damaged during the accident in November 2011.

The R870,000 payout will be used to cover Ferreira’s hospital bill, but he has other ongoing expenses, none of which have been paid yet.

In response to a question by Democratic Alliance MPL in Gauteng Jack Bloom in the legislature on Tuesday, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane said she refused to allow the Ferreira issue to be politicised.

She said she would honour her promise to ensure that all Ferreira’s expenses were paid.

“It’s not an empty promise, he is being supported. I refuse to allow the issue to be politicised, and I wish him all the best.”
