Mother (19) allegedly stabbed her one-year-old daughter to death

THE teenage mother suspected of killing her own daughter has been remanded in custody by the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court.

Lesego Sello, 19, of Kagiso, will now appear in the same court on Monday when a senior state prosecutor, who was not present yesterday, will decide whether she should undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Sello allegedly killed her one-year-old daughter Basetsana a fortnight ago at her home.

According to Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya: "The information we received was that she and her daughter were dropped off at her home by her boyfriend. She watched television with the family who went to bed at around 10pm."

What happened next is a mystery that the police themselves are still trying to unravel.

Sibiya said Sello later called her mother, who stays in Randfontein, informing her that her granddaughter was dead.

"After calling her mother and informing her about what had happened, Sello allegedly hung up and switched off her phone," Sibiya said.

Numb from shock and in a state of panic, the mother called Sello's aunt - who lives in the same yard with the suspect - to check on her.

"When the aunt checked in her room, she saw Sello's baby with stab wounds on her upper body. The little girl had reportedly been stabbed eight times," Sibiya said.

Yesterday Sello looked relaxed while chatting to her family during a court recess.

"It's not bad in prison. A police officer even gave me sleeping pills," she said.
