Dead cop's wife up for murder

A WOMAN arrested together with her boyfriend will appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court this morning after the death of her policeman husband at the weekend.

The middle-aged woman, of Geelhout Park near Tlhabane in North West, and a man who has been described by police as her boyfriend were arrested yesterday.

Their arrest followed the discovery of the body of the warrant officer at his house in Tlhabane on Sunday morning.

Police spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the two were arrested after the woman's initial statement regarding her husband's disappearance and the discovery of his body were inconsistent.

"She initially told the police that her husband had left [on the Friday] for Tlhabane, where he was going to see someone regarding a debt," Ngubane said.

He said the woman told police she had called her 53-year-old husband the next day, without any luck.

"She told the police that her husband had left his phone in the house," Ngubane said.

The woman then told the police that early on Sunday morning, she found her husband dead in their yard.

"She said at around 5am she went outside to air her laundry," Ngubane said.

"That is when she discovered her husband lying dead in their yard.

"She then asked her son to call the ambulance but he [the husband] was already dead."

However, police suspected foul play when, following further questioning of the policeman's wife, they found inconsistencies in her answers.

"I cannot go into details about how she was arrested, but a number of factors didn't add up following the police officers' interviews with her," Ngubane said.

"She was then arrested, together with her boyfriend, and both of them were charged with murder." - selebim@sowetan.co.za
