WORKERS at the North West department of public works claim they were dismissed after being told they had been employed illegally.

The 104 people worked as gardeners and said they had been earning R2,500 a month for a year without any written contract.

They claim they were dismissed on May 25 by project supervisor Ontlametse Mokgara. Though they had not signed any appointment letters, the workers said they received pay slips every month. They also claim they all had persal numbers.

The workers said they were promised permanent jobs only if they "leave politics and appreciate what the department was doing for them".

Before their employment, the group was part of people on the Extended Public Works Programme from June 2010 to May 2011.

Department spokesman Matshube Mfoloe said that the workers' one-year contract expired in June last year.
