SIX people implicated in the brutal murder of an Mpumalanga athlete Jeremiah Hlalele have been denied bail.
Hlalele's wife, Selinah, her friend Ntombi Mafubetswana, 48, and the three alleged hitmen - Thamage Thapelo, 39, Popole Lebele, 27, and Mohlahlehi Makele, 30 - appeared in the Evander Magistrate's Court on Friday.
The three alleged hitmen, all from Lesotho, allegedly confessed to the police that Selinah had promised them R20,000 to execute her husband.
The men were allegedly organised by Mafubetswana after Selinah's request.
Selinah's two kids allegedly told the police about their mother's intentions.
The siblings had initially been charged for not informing the police but were later set free after turning state's witnesses.
The hitmen were allegedly paid R5,000 upfront and promised the balance of R15,000 after the job had been done.
Hlalele, 48, a well-known athlete, was found dead in his house at Thistle Grove in Kinross, Mpumalanga, with multiple stab wounds.
He worked as a senior process controller at Sasol in Secunda.
"She (Selinah) hired a backyard room a kilometre from their house, while Hlalele continued to stay with the kids at the house," Mpumalanga police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said.
"Prior to her moving out, the couple were always involved in nasty domestic violence and the police were frequently called to the house to intervene."
Hlalele was killed on May 6 and police made a breakthrough a week later.
The hearing has been postponed to June 8.
