Chiefs want fines

THE role of traditional courts has again been put in the spotlight as traditional leaders suggest that fines accrued from lawbreakers should be used to pay traditional court messengers and officials.

The government has renewed consultation to have the bill, proposed in 2008, to have traditional leaders preside over petty crimes in their areas passed into legislation.

Though some villagers are in favour of the planned legislation, academics are against the motion.

Traditional leaders in Limpopo do not want the fines taken to state coffers.
