THE ANC in Gauteng has moved quickly to crush persistent ill-discipline and the rising spectre of factionalism in its ranks by suspending 19 members.
The party's provincial executive committee (PEC) resolved to "summarily suspend" the members, after receiving reports that they were involved in violent protests that saw several government properties torched in Ratanda, Heidelberg, east of Johannesburg earlier this year.
The small township of Ratanda went up in flames in March when disgruntled residents went on the rampage over high electricity tariffs and power cuts.
At least six homes belonging to local councillors were reported to have been burnt during the protests.
Party spokesman Dumisa Ntuli said suspension letters had been served on the 19 members and they would likely face charges of being at the "forefront" of orchestrating the violent protests and "bringing the organisation into disrepute".
Ntuli told Sowetan that the group of suspended members comprised disgruntled individuals whose hopes for higher positions within the party had been dashed.
"We suspect issues of factionalism because some of them had ambitions," Ntuli said.
He said the party had also resolved to tackle councillors who instigated violence in municipalities.
