HIS government is building bigger and better RDP houses, with bathrooms and ceilings, than is the case in other provinces, says Free State premier Ace Magashule

Magashule, who was flanked by his MECs, was speaking during the launch of the Operation Hlasela media tour at Clarens in the eastern Free State.

The tour was aimed at showcasing some of the changes his administration has made.

Magashule said while there were changes brought about by his administration, they still needed to deliver more. "We are working hard, but our mayors and councillors should be more aggressive on the ground.

"You must build a relationship with the public and find out about their needs," Magashule said.

He told Sowetan his administration had been criticised and accused of doing nothing. "People do not know what we have been doing in the province. We are bringing change in people's lives, despite being faced with challenges."

Magashule said his administration was building bigger RDP houses than other provinces. "Our houses are bigger, have ceilings and bathrooms. We are restoring the dignity of our people."

His administration was also phasing out the employment of private security guards to protect government buildings.

"Since we took over in 2009, many people have not been unemployed. We had reservists who had been serving the police service for more than 15 years. Today we are training 2,600 of them and they will ensure that our buildings are safe."

Magashule said he strongly believed in gender equality and would strive towards having more women employed by his government.

"Another critical issue is education. Our departments are giving bursaries to poor people. We have managed to raise R184-million for their bursaries," he said.

MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs Olly Mlamleli said her department was also working hard to bring about change despite being faced with challenges in some municipalities.

"We are sending competent and skilled people to assist struggling municipalities like Nala, Naledi and Setsoto. Our biggest challenge again is incomplete houses which we are going to complete in this financial year," Mlamleli said.
