Policeman testifies in Tatane matter

The State called a policeman as its next witness in the murder and assault trial of seven public order policemen in the Ficksburg Regional Court .

Testimony by Constable Kabelo Pule, a colleague of the seven men at the public order unit in Thaba Nchu, was interrupted when the recording equipment malfunctioned.

At the start of Tuesday's proceedings prosecutor Celeste Zara Ferris told the court that negotiations were still continuing with the SA Broadcasting Corporation.

The matter concerning the broadcaster was discussed in chambers with magistrate Hein van Niekerk before the session started, but no further detail was given in court.

The seven officers each face murder and assault charges following the death of Ficksburg protester Andries Tatane during a march against poor service delivery in the Setsoto local municipality on April 13, 2011.

The violence was caught on camera and aired on SABC news.

On Monday, three SABC staff in Bloemfontein testified. Cameraman Filane Chomane told the court what he saw and filmed on the day of Tatane's murder. He had been in Ficksburg to cover the protest march for the public broadcaster.

Acting regional SABC news editor Richard Newton and his assistant Elsabe du Plessis also testified. Newton explained the editing process for a television news story.

Du Plessis testified about the safe keeping of raw, unedited video material that Chomane gathered on the day of Tatane's death.

The court had seen unedited video material of the march taken by a police cameraman, and the SABC's news bulletin of the incident. The broadcaster however declined to hand over its unedited video tapes to investigators.

The case continues.
