ANC secretary in Limpopo's Peter Mokaba region, James Mankge, has been suspended for refusing to call regional executive committee meetings.

Mankge and his deputy Johanna Aphiri were suspended on Saturday by members of the regional executive committee (REC).

Sowetan has seen the letter of suspension, signed by 14 REC members, including six sub-regional representatives and four members of the party's leagues.

The suspension takes place only three weeks before the region holds its elective conference. Current chairman Lawrence Mapoulo, who denies the suspension, will face off against his deputy Serite Sekgoloane.

At the centre of the suspensions are allegations that Mankge and Aphiri had backed Sekgoloane.

The leaders also accused Aphiri of having failed to attend several REC meetings.

It said she last attended a meeting in 2011.
