101 arrested over Reddersburg violence

THE number of residents arrested for public violence at Reddersburg in the southern Free State has risen to 101 and the N6 remains closed to traffic, SABC news reported yesterday

On Monday, 53 people were arrested following a barricade of the N6 with burning tyres and rocks.

More arrests were made after angry protesters tried to damage property in one of the township's areas.

Residents are demanding that their area be incorporated into the Mangaung metro, which includes Bloemfontein.

The protesters were angry about an unsatisfactory response to a memorandum handed to the Kopanong local municipality three weeks ago.

Previously they tried to set the municipal offices and a local police station alight.

Reddersburg's municipal building was set alight on Monday during renewed violence by residents of the nearby Matoporong township.

Police said the residents also threw stones at the municipal building, at the library and at a supermarket, said Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi.

The N6 in Reddersburg was closed because it was littered with stones.

Free State MEC for safety and security Butana Komphela is expected to visit the area. Hlubi said police had opened two more cases of arson and sabotage.
