ANC KZN to launch membership drive

ANC eThekwini regional chairman and KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the party plans to go on a massive recruitment drive in certain areas.

"We have seen a dwindling support in areas like Chatsworth, Wentworth and Phoenix. We plan to visit these areas in order to revive the ANC and to increase membership there. While we have made inroads in these areas, it's still not what we want. We still need to swell," said Dhlomo, insisting, however, that they seek "quality membership over quantity".

Recently the ANC has expressed concern at its failure to attract Indian and Coloured members. During the election, the party's votes tend to show that it is not penetrating areas dominated by other racial groups.

Regional secretary Bhekithemba Ntshangase said ANC membership was divided into two groups - members in good standing and those who are not in good standing "but are still ANC members".

"The difference is that those in good standing have privileges which others don't, like taking part in party decisions," he said.

"It [membership] is not guaranteed for life, but [guaranteed] by the behaviour and respect for the ANC and its values. Integrity and humbleness is what will build the organis ation.

"While members might commit acts as individuals, if seen negatively, these would reflect on the party as a whole. Whatever you do, you must do to glorify the ANC," he said.
