THE street in which one of President Jacob Zuma's four wives, Nompumelelo (MaNtuli), lives is one of three Pretoria East streets covered by the first phase of a multi-million hi-tech closed-circuit surveillance system.
Because of its population of wealthy people, including diplomats as well as government ministers such as Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula and Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, the Waterkloof suburb is a constant target of criminals.
Between April 2010 and March 2011, a total of 114 burglaries, 889 cases of car theft and 77 house robberies were reported at Brooklyn police station - under which Waterkloof and surrounding suburbs fall.
The three operational cameras are part of the first phase of the project spearheaded by private security company ADT which will see a total of 40 surveillance cameras strategically placed on streets entering Newkloof, Waterkloof, Monument Park West, Constantia Park, Garsfontein, Constantia Glen Security Village - as well as Moreleta Park.
The 24-hour surveillance system - with vehicle registration recognition capabilities - is also linked to the police's stolen vehicle database and police are alerted once the system identifies a vehicle as being stolen.
Constantia Park and Waterkloof Glen Residents Association director Renier Engelbrecht said their area once had one of the highest crime rates but their crime prevention drives, started in April 2009, had seen crime dropping by 50 percent.
She said 310 residents were issued with 2- way radios to report suspicious activities.
