800 affected by Joburg gas leak

A gas leak affected about 800 people in Randburg today, Gauteng paramedics said.

“Paramedics have responded to a mass casualty incident believed to have been caused by a gas leak at a building in the Randburg CBD,” Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said.

“An emergency call was placed to 082-911 and medics rushed to the scene.”

He said initial reports indicated that 800 people were affected.

The building had been evacuated. The name and location of the building were not yet known.

“Eight people, five in a serious condition, were treated at the scene,” he said.

“They were moved to a medical station away from the building.”

Wicks said the injured showed symptoms of respiratory distress.

“The gas is believed to have circulated through the building in the ventilation system,” he said.
