LIMPOPO education MEC Dickson Masemola has been appointed acting premier of the province while incumbent Cassel Mathale recovers after a car crash that happened on Thursday night, his office said

"MEC Masemola has been appointed acting premier with effect from now (yesterday)," spokeswoman Mashadi Mathosa said.

"Mr Masemola will be the acting premier until Easter Monday [April 9] when Mr Mathale resumes office.

"The premier is fine and still at home recuperating. He will definitely be back next week," Mathosa said.

Limpopo police were investigating the circumstances under which Mathale's official vehicle left the road and crashed into a small hill before overturning at GaSekgopo village.

Mathale, who was the only passenger, and his driver were admitted to Polokwane Medi-Clinic.

The driver was discharged later that day and Mathale was discharged on Friday.

Mathosa has declined to give details of "the premier's minor injuries", but disclosed that the province's first citizen had some stitches on his right ear.

Masemola, a close ally of Mathale, was also re-elected his deputy in the ANC during the provincial conference in December while Mathale triumphed over Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Joe Phaahla.
