Huge increase in petrol prices

The price of petrol will increase by 66 cents a litre in coastal provinces and 71 cents a litre in Gauteng this week as increased government levies kick in

In February, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that the fuel levy and the road accident fund levy would increase by 20 cents and eight cents a litre respectively. This has been included in April’s increase.

Diesel would increase by 47.6 cents at the coast and 51.9 cents in Gauteng.

Paraffin would rise by 20.6 and 26.6 cents at the coast and in Gauteng respectively.

Average international prices of petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin increased over the past month. However, a stronger rand-US dollar exchange rate helped to cushion the price increase, the department said.

“The strengthening of the rand against the dollar decreased the contribution to the basic fuels price on petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin by 5.41 cents a litre, 5.53 cents a litre, and 5.40 cents a litre respectively,” the department said.
