Teen in court for hanging 6 cats

A 19-YEAR-OLD school pupil who allegedly killed her cat and its five kittens by hanging them on a tree near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, will appear in court today on a charge of cruelty to animals.

On Human Rights Day last Wednesday, the Grade 10 pupil at Matlaisane Secondary School in Majaneng village killed a year-old cat and its three-day-old litter.

The girl was arrested before a crowd of curious onlookers after the Tshwane SPCA opened a case at Temba police station.

Shocked villagers said some of the cats were still alive when the neighbour's child reported the incident but were very weak and eventually died.

A still shocked and angry neighbour said she failed to understand why the girl had not just given the cats to the SPCA instead of killing them.

Richard Mokwena said his child alerted him after discovering what resembled a horror scene.

"I went outside and found some still kicking. I called the police but they referred me to their patrol staff that referred to the SPCA. When the SPCA arrived, all six were dead."

" No one knows why she killed them the way she did but what I know is that they helped us get rid of the rats that are attracted by the heaps of rubbish kept by the same neighbour."

SCPA animal inspector Meshack Matlou described what happened as "shocking". "The poor cats were not even a threat to her."

Matlou called on the court to pass a stiff sentence that would stop others from ill-treating animals.
