Man hurt as building collapse

A MAN was injured when a building collapsed in downtown Johannesburg yesterday, the city said.

"An adult male has been taken to the Hillbrow Hospital," city spokesman Niel Rooi said. "He was outside the building and some of the debris fell on him."

The building is situated on the corner of Jeppe and End streets. Rooi said a fire had ripped through the building in February and people were stealing the steel support beams from the structure, which might have caused the collapse.

An investigation was due to start today.

Rescuers would search for more injured people, he said.
