Sali Agnes Mkhwebane, 39, who appeared in the Middleburg Magistrate's Court, said she hit the child "because she had strangled the cat".
Mkhwebane said she hit the child approximately 10 times by hand, but this was disputed because the child's skin was broken in several places, the Citizen reports.
