Portia's dream on track

PORTIA Makamu can breathe a sigh of relief after Sowetan helped her sort out her problems with Home Affairs and there is hope of her being able to enrol at a university next year.

Makamu, pictured, was devastated when the ID she received from Home Affairs last year had a number that was different to the one on her Senior Certificate.

As a result she could not register at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Makamu had hoped to become the first member of her family to study at tertiary level and learn diagnostic radiography at TUT.

After Sowetan intervened, Makamu was able to get the confirmation letter needed from Home Affairs to take to the Department of Education and have the ID number on her Senior Certificate changed to match her new ID.

"I'm so happy," said the overjoyed teen. "I don't know what I would have done without you guys."

The mix-up began when Makamu applied for her ID in 2008 and someone at Home Affairs changed her birth date.
