Says: "It was a mistake of a grievous nature which vexes me much"

Johannesburg radio DJ Gareth Cliff was fined R10,000 (or six months’ imprisonment) for speeding by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Magistrate Desmond Nair ordered that Cliff’s driver’s licence not be suspended.

He said this was Cliff’s first offence and he had pleaded guilty to contravening the Road Traffic Act.

“I cannot draw a distinction between such embarrassment or reputational damage that he may have suffered as compared to any other person who would appear before the court,” Nair said.

“I do, however, attach significant weight to the fact that you pleaded guilty, which is a sign of remorse.”

Cliff was arrested on March 6 when he was caught driving 182 kilometres an hour in a 120km/h zone on the R21 in Lyttelton, near Pretoria, by the high speed unit. He was later released on bail.

He appeared in court last Wednesday when the case was postponed because there was an inquiry into whether his licence should be suspended.

Earlier in court, Cliff’s attorney Werner Bruyns read out a statement in which Cliff said: “It was a mistake of a grievous nature which vexes me much”.
