Madonsela sorry over daughter's tweets

PUBLIC Protector Thuli Madonsela has apologised for her 20-year-old daughter's tweets about the state car her son crashed.

Madonsela also applauded the Sowetan "for taking its role of watching the watchmen seriously".

Last week Madonsela's daughter, Wenzile, thanked her brother for crashing their mother's state-issued BMW X6 because the incident has led to the use of a "much sexier car".

Wenzile, whose social network Twitter name is @wenzi-madonsela, tweeted on Tuesday: "Thank u for @Wantu_Roths (her brother) for crashing the X6. the new car is too much sexier :D." (sic).

She later said she was joking.

Wantu, 23, smashed the black BMW into the garden wall of a house on Lucky Bean Crescent, near Moreleta Park in Pretoria, on February 2.

"The public protector deeply regrets that the consequence of her child's playful tweets may have cost the people of South Africa," Madonsela's office said in a statement.

"The public protector also notes that her daughter is a young 20-year-old who meant no harm but however regrets that her judgement may have created an impression that she trivialises an important issue involving the use of public resources," Madonsela's office said in a statement.

"The truth is that the public protector has not received a new car but has been allocated a lend car from the government garage to enable her to continue with her work."
