Struggle icon's statue desecrated again

THE statue in Bethal of anti-apartheid youth activist Nokuthula Simelane has been vandalised - again.

THE statue in Bethal of anti-apartheid youth activist Nokuthula Simelane has been vandalised - again.

Authorities say footprints forming part of Simelane's statue were stolen either on Tuesday night or in the early hours of Wednesday this week.

"An employee of the Govan Mbeki municipality, where the statue stands, noticed that the footprints were missing when he reported for work on Wednesday and blew the whistle," culture department spokesman Teddy Ndlazi said.

Departmental MEC Manana said she was deeply saddened by the incident, which she described as barbaric.

This is the second violation of the Nokuthula Simelane statue.

In January last year Cornelius van Tonder was found guilty of malicious damage to property and theft. Van Tonder tied a rope around the neck of the statue, attached the rope to a bakkie and drove off, breaking it into pieces.

The statue was erected by the Mpumalanga government in 2009 to honour Simelane, who was a struggle icon.

She was abducted in Johannesburg in the 1980s and allegedly killed by apartheid security forces.
