Malema was rude, rowdy - KZN youth

Province supported Malema in the past but started to feel that he was becoming bigger than the ANC itself

ANC Youth League members in KwaZulu-Natal rejoiced at the news of the expulsion of the league's national president, Julius Malema, by the ANC's national disciplinary committee on Wednesday night.

The league's provincial chairman, Mthandeni Dlungwane, said they accepted the decision, and that it was not the first of its kind in the history of the ANC.

He said they were very happy with the bold steps taken by the ANC against Malema.

Dlungwane is part of the youth league executive that was disbanded by Malema but refused to accept his decision.

"Many similar decisions have been taken by the organisation over the years in its 100 years. Whether the decisions are painful or not to some people ... the ANC has spoken. Malema is not the first one to be fired.

"Prominent leaders like Bantu Holomisa and the late Sifiso Nkabinde, who was loved by many, were also expelled by the organisation. We will always remember Malema as a rude and rowdy person," he said.

Dlungwane said Malema's behaviour was "foreign" to the ANC, and that he had constantly defied the organisation.

He said they have supported Malema in the past but started to feel that he was becoming bigger than the ANC itself.

"The ANC's move to expel Malema will help the organisation to reclaim the culture of respect. Malema never respected anyone, not even the elders.

"In the ANC we cannot allow ill-discipline as we joined the organisation voluntarily. Each member signs an oath committing to abide by the party's constitution," he said.

Dlungwane said they would soon convene a special provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting to deliberate on the ANC national disciplinary committee's decision and to also find a way forward as the league prepares for life without Malema.

The ANC youth wing in the province believes that the expulsion of Malema will serve as a lesson to many members that they are not bigger than the organisation.

The youth league was no longer presented in the national structure under Malema leadership. The PEC also had several standoffs with Malema's executive members.

They also defied Malema and the ANCYL working committee, and were ultimately told to disband - the reason allegedly being that they were against a "plot" to campaign for the removal of President Jacob Zuma as president of the organisation.
