Community tired of being terrorised by criminals tries to get at two alleged housebreakers

ANGRY protesters yesterday scratched a police van trying to get at two suspects, who face several charges of housebreaking and theft. They were being taken to the Malamulele Magistrate's Court for their first appearance.

Two young men from Muchipisi village - Tlangelani Russel Baloyi, 22, and Tlangelani Codri Chauke, 22 - appeared in the court on several charges of housebreaking and fraud.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alson Mapindani said: "The suspects were found in possession of several stolen goods such as TVs, cellphones, laptops and clothes."

The arrest of the two was met with anger from the community of Malamulele township, who have been terrorised by criminals for some time.

Traffic came to a standstill during a march led by the South African Communist Party, a civic organisation and the Malamulele Community Policing Forum to the Malamulele Magistrate's Court to demand that no bail should be granted to the two accused.

Local SACP secretary Muchini Baloyi said the residents had been terrorised by criminals.

"We do shifts at night, some sleeping while others patrol the streets until midnight and another group takes over until 4am," Baloyi said.

He said the criminals terrorised the community and also raped women.

"This has affected the education of our children as they sleep in fear," Baloyi said.

"We oppose any intention to grant them bail since they have been positively linked to the crimes ravaging our communities."

A memorandum was handed to the manager of the court, Gezani Baloyi, who challenged the community to provide information to the police that would lead to the conviction of the accused.

Malamulele has been hit by crime, most of which is unsolved.

In October, a 22-year-old EPP High School pupil was shot dead in his bedroom, and three weeks ago a 33-year-old mother of three, Rirhandzi Maringa, was found murdered outside the township.

Police believe she was also raped.

The two cases have not been solved.
