Ex-SABC man in court over football account

Payment of R2.5 million was allegedly made through a football club account

A former head of the SABC's legal services facing fraud charges appeared with an alleged accomplice in the Johannesburg Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.

Mafika Sihlali and Sylvester Sithole would be back in court on May 3, National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Kholeka Gcaleka said.

Sithole was granted R20,000 bail.

Sihlali, who was appointed to the SABC on August 1, 2006 and held the post for two years, allegedly outsourced legal services to a company belonging to Sithole.

This was despite the SABC having sufficient capacity to handle these services.

Sihlali allegedly received R2.5 million from Sithole through a football club account he held.

At his first appearance earlier this month, Sihlali was granted R15,000 bail.
