THE community of Phahameng township in Bloemfontein, where former Free State premier Winkie Direko was born, is still reeling from shock after her death in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Direko passed away after suffering a stroke at the age of 82.

She was described by her community as a leader, motivator, activist and role model.

She was also described as fond of people and one one who always wanted to help others.

Mamsy Mokoena, who knew Direko all her life, said: "We grew up under the watchful eye of Mme Direko, who used to inspire us to strive for a better life.

"She used to own a tuck shop in the late 80s and didn't mind giving to the community. Poor people used to ask her for food and other necessities and she often obliged," Mokoena said.

She said she would not forget the day when her mother died in 1991.

"We did not have money to bury our mother. Mme Winkie visited our house to convey her condolences. She realised that we were struggling with the burial arrangements and offered to bury my mother. I will never forget her," Mokoena said.

Another resident, Tshidiso Marite, said Direko often assisted him with money to travel to school.

"Mme Direko always helped us with money to buy food and pay for transport," Marite said.

Stompie Maroke, who worked for Direko for five years, said: "Whenever any member of the community had a problem we knew she was the one to assist."

He said many youngsters who were in politics often hid in and slept at her house when they were on the run from police.

Direko was born in 1929 in Bloemfontein. She was an activist, teacher and principal before switching to politics. In 1993 she was chosen as Bloemfonteiner of the Year for her outstanding contribution in her hometown.
