Newborn for family who's kids died of hunger

Here's the full story from yesterday's newspaper

THE family of four children who died from hunger and dehydration last year in Verdwaal, North West, are celebrating the arrival of a new baby girl

Elizabeth Mmupele and her mother Martha could not believe that they would hold a new baby just three months after their children were found dead in a field while on the hunt for their sister who went out in search of food.

Following their loss, the family thought they would never be able to smile again.

Elizabeth gave birth to little Dineo on Monday weighing 3.1kg. She was delivered safely at 12.30pm at Itsoseng clinic.

"We're in disbelief but are fantastically happy," Elizabeth said. "It's sad for us that we lost those children, but Dineo's birth has brought so much joy."

Her mother Martha said her granddaughter is an answer from God.

"I asked God to give us closure to what had happened and little Dineo is just the perfect answer from God," she said.

The proud mum opened up for the first time after the tragic deaths of her children Olebogeng and Oarabetswe and her siblings Sebengu and Mmapula.

"I will always describe myself as a mother of three," she said.

Now that another baby was born, Elizabeth said the anger and pain was going away.

"Before the birth of my child, I felt empty. It was as if everything has been sucked out of me," she said.

She said little Dineo is like an angel to her family.

"Now I can talk freely about that day and what happened and it feels good. You want to cry until no tears are left. You cannot handle the loss anymore and you swear that you will never love another human being ever again. I know I can't bring them back," she said.

"After giving birth to little Dineo, I felt petrified. I asked myself lots of questions, like what if this baby would die too?

"What if I could not be a good mother? And I realised that even though I felt guilty it was not my fault."

She said she was scared to hold her and love her completely, thinking that if she would give her heart to her all the way, she too would die.
