Free State Premier Ace Magashule's son Thabo was almost locked up in jail

Thabo, 24, was arrested on the N1 outside Bloemfontein on Monday night for allegedly driving at 177km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Thabo had to pay R3,000 bail to be set free.

A police officer at Verkeerdevlei police station said Thabo, who is the premier's youngest son, overtook four trucks at high speed on a barrier line.

"The police who were patrolling the area were shocked at the manner at which the car was going.

"The area is regarded as a high-accident zone.

"Many lives have been lost there before," said the police officer, who asked that his name should not be mentioned.

Free State police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mbambu confirmed the arrest of Thabo Magashule.

"He is facing a charge of reckless driving, negligence and over-speeding," said Mbambu.

"The case was postponed to March 7 for further investigation."

Magashule's spokesman Wisani Ngobeni said he was not aware of the arrest and would not comment on the matter.
