DA is racist - councillors

TWO Democratic Alliance councillors in Makhado, Limpopo, have accused the party of racism following the termination of their membership over allegations that they rigged the candidate list during last year's municipal elections.

Caucus leader Kenneth Maboho and councillor Jerry Mahwai also warned party leader Helen Zille of the bad treatment of black members in their region by the DA's provincial leader, Desiree van der Walt.

The two were charged and expelled by Van der Walt last week.

Maboho yesterday accused Van der Walt of changing the list herself when she pushed a white junior member of the party to the top in ward 21. The member is now a councillor in that ward.

He said Van der Walt was sidelining black members of the party who posed a serious challenge to her position ahead of the coming provincial elective congress.

In a letter to Zille, Maboho points out how Van der Walt fought him after he raised concerns about the continuing postponement of the much-awaited congress.

"Considering what Desiree (Van der Walt) is doing to black members of the party who appear to be more intelligent, and prospects to higher provincial positions, one is forced to label her a professional racist," Maboho and Mahwai say in the letter.

Van der Walt said yesterday that all processes in the party's constitution were followed when the memberships of Maboho and Mahwai were terminated.

She refused to comment further and referred Sowetan to DA federal chairman James Selfe, who was not available.
