Police foil bid to rob bombed ATMs

TWO automated teller machines have been blown up during an attempted robbery at the Absa Bank in Libode near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said

Patrolling police heard the sound of explosions at about 11pm on Tuesday and raced to the scene.

"The robbers saw the officers coming and fled without taking the money," Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

"The police are still gathering evidence in order to determine the type of devices used to blow up the machines."

One machine was completely destroyed. Fatyela said an attempted robbery or an ATM bombing docket would be opened.
