Smooth sailing for grade 1s

THERE were few tears at Shomang Primary School in Orlando West when school started yesterday.

Instead, children were singing and talking excitedly about the new year.

Only two of the 50 grade 1 pupils cried. A third cried because she had no chair to sit on - a problem that was quickly solved.

"The stronger ones have been here since last year, the rest will have friends by the end of the day," principal Seatlana Chapatso said.

The only hiccup was that one of the two grade 1 teachers was off sick, so the pupils were herded together in one classroom.

The first day of school was clearly a collective effort, with even governing body chairman Lucky Diale assisting with a few late registrations.
