Public outrage over Biko-like police brutality

SCORES of Samora Machel residents in Philippi marched on the streets to hand over memorandum with their grievances about police brutality at Weltevreden Valley police station (Nyanga satellite police station) in Samora Machel on Saturday.

This was after police officers from the station a week ago allegedly assaulted and killed Mzoxolo Zozo, 32, at the station.

ANC chairman and former councillor Monwabisi Mbaliswana said the incident reminded them of Steve Biko, who died in a police van.

"As community we demand that the police department pay all the expenses for the funeral of the victim and that containers be removed from the station and a fully-fledged station built."

Mbaliswana labelled some of the police officers working at the station as criminals.

"Some of the officers come to work drunk. They go around in Samora confiscating alcohol in shebeens, which they drink," he said.

He demanded that Samora Machel be returned to Mitchells Plain.

ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini said: "We arrested two police officers, but the investigation is still on."

Zozo died a week ago after he was allegedly assaulted by Weltevreden Valley police officers at the station.

He died in the back of the police van on the way to Nyanga police station.
