N Cape MEC lauds schools despite 3.5% drop in passes

NORTHERN Cape MEC for education Grizelda Cjiekella yesterday lamented the province's matric results, which showed a 3.5% pass rate decrease.

Cjiekella said of the 10183 pupils who wrote the exams, 7002 candidates passed .

Despite the decrease in the pass rate, Cjiekella commended eight schools that obtained a 100% pass rate in the past four years.

The schools are Kimberley Girls, Colesberg, Douglas, Duineveld, Fraserburg, Hopetown, Namakwaland and Prieska high schools.

Despite the 100% pass rate of these eight schools, it was revealed that "only 19.9% of the candidates obtained a pass with entry to university as opposed to 21.1% last year (2010)".

The top candidate in the province is Christine de Kock of Diamantveld High School and the top candidate from previously disadvantaged communities is Jamie-Lee Albertram of Victoria-Wes Combined School. Albertram was able to be fourth in the provincial top 20 pupils.

"It is worth noting that in this year's provincial top 20, a total of seven of our top 20 candidates are from previously disadvantaged communities," said Cjiekella.

One school, Phakamisani High, has been singled out by the MEC as the best improved, after it shot from a 33.3% pass in 2010 to a whopping 62.5% in 2011.
