ANCYL says Nzimande 'ranting is shocking'

THE ANC Youth League has rebuked SACP leader Blade Nzimande for criticising the league's decision to organise mass action to demand the nationalisation of mines and youth employment.

Nzimande told members of the SACP in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend not to support the march which was intended to undermine the ANC and the government.

ANCYL spokesman Floyd Shivambu yesterday accused Nzimande of being dishonest.

"The secretary of the SACP has once again raised false alarms and labelled the ANC Youth League economic freedom mass action as an attack on the ANC and government.

"(The) ANC Youth League has organised marches before demanding jobs for youth and the opening up of economic opportunities, and such has never been viewed as an attack on the ANC and government," he said.

Shivambu said Nzimande's attitude was a sign that he was defending capitalists.

"Opposing the ANC Youth League mass action for economic freedom is tantamount to defending the interests of white monopoly capital, mostly represented in the Chamber of Mines and Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

"It is indeed shocking for a general secretary of a communist party to defend the interests of white monopoly capital .

"Such conduct is not only counter-revolutionary, but smacks of infiltration by representatives of the enemy of the NDR (national democratic revolution), white monopoly capital."

Shivambu said the league would go ahead with its marches planned for later this month and was not concerned by the "ranting" of Nzimande.

"The SACP he speaks on behalf of does not have political, ideological and mass power.

"It is rather a stepladder to government positions and parliamentary seats, which are not used to pursue the interests of the working class and the poor."

lThabo Kupa, an ANCYL national executive member, writing in his personal capacity in Sowetan yesterday, said - in part - that: "The youth march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on October 27 presents business with an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to youth development." -Additional reporting by Victor Mecoamere
