Blade slams ANCYL over planned march

SA Communist Party general-secretary Blade Nzimande has hit out at the ANC Youth League, urging its members not to participate in "any march that will not make a difference" in their lives.

Nzimande was addressing delegates at the SACP's 6th provincial congress at Esikhawini in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday. In an indirect attack on ANCYL leader Julius Malema, Nzimande urged the youth not to be misled by political individuals who only "want to benefit themselves".

"Do not allow yourselves to be used by people with agendas that are not in your interest," said Nzimande.

In a reference to the planned mass action by the ANCYL this month to demand the nationalisation of mines and employment for young people, Nzimande called on the youth not to participate.

"We are not going to be supporting any march whose intention is malicious and is to undermine the authority of the ANC and the government," he said.

Young Communist League provincial organising secretary Mlondolozi Mkhize said their members would not participate because it was aimed at undermining the ANC.

"We view this march as nothing else but a direct attack on the ANC and its government.

Mkhize said the YCL viewed the march as a "struggle by Malema to demonstrate" how he can organise young people to insult the ANC and the government. The right approach would be to engage with the ANC.

"It's a demonstration to cause instability . It's an opportunistic element to distract young people, " Mkhize said.

Nzimande also touched the issue about tenders, saying it was the major cause of corruption.

"We must stand up and fight corruption," he said. "We must name and shame those who come to us at night to give us cash, to have parties for us, to buy us to vote in a particular way."
