Winnie doing well after foot operation

ANC VETERAN and former ANC Women's League president Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is recuperating at the Life Brenthurst Clinic in Johannesburg after undergoing a minor foot operation.

The ANC said yesterday Madikizela-Mandela was admitted on Saturday as a result of a pain in her ankle.

She was checked by doctors and subsequently underwent the operation.

"She has been admitted to our facility and is doing fine," hospital spokeswoman Veronica Holliday said yesterday.

Madikizela-Mandela has been in the media recently since she came out in support of beleaguered ANCYL leader, Juliu s Malema.

She described Malema as a radical youth leader who was challenging the conservative leadership of the ANC.

She has also been at Malema's side during his appearance in the equality court where he was facing charges of promoting hate speech.

On Monday, the court ruled that in singing Shoot the Boer, Malema was promoting hate speech. The court ruled that it would henceforth be illegal for anyone to sing the song.

Last week, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale appointed Madi-kizela-Mandela to head a task team to tackle the unenclosed toilet saga.
