Alleged robber 'too busy' to recall where he was

THE man dubbed the King of Bling yesterday denied any knowledge of several robberies he has been charged with

William Mbatha appeared in the Johannesburg high court yesterday and made a few phone calls before he shuffled to the witness box in leg irons.

His lawyer, Francois Roets, asked him if he was involved in the robbery of Vijay Ghanshamdas on March 16 2009.

"I was not involved in the commission of the robbery," Mbatha replied.

He also denied any involvement in the robbery of Jun Cai on December 4 2008, Ismael Omar and his family on April 9 2009 and the robbery of Mantsie Mojapelo on April 30 2009.

Mbatha, also known as Mashwabana, is on trial for a series of armed robberies in which he is alleged to have passed himself off as a cop before robbing his victims.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

He said though he could not recall where he was during the other robberies, he knew he was at Moloko, a night club in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on the night Mantsie Mojapelo was robbed.

But he failed to explain how his cellphone number was recorded on cellphone towers near the Oriental Plaza on the day Ghanshamdas and Omar were robbed.

"I can't say where I was on that day because I do a hundred things in a day," he said. He is alleged to be part of a group that robbed the businessmen.
