Residents to get homes in four years

The City of Cape Town says it will build houses for Mfuleni residents in four years' time.

The announcement follows a march by 300 residents a week ago to the Western Cape provincial legislature in protest against a lack of decent houses in their area.

This week Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for human settlements at the City of Cape Town, said there was a proposed Mfuleni Extension 2 housing project.

"It is on the city's budget and is set to commence in about two years' time," he said.

Consultants have been appointed to do a feasibility study to ensure that the city can get the necessary environmental and planning approvals.

"We also want to establish what areas can be used.

"There were some environmental restraints on part of the area.")."

They will be 40 square metre m2 RDP houses and the project is expected to be completed in four years.

Sonnenberg could not say how many houses would be built.

He said it was sad that many of the beneficiaries now being allocated places on their housing projects have been waiting since before 1999.
