Pressure on care centres to shape up

EKURHULENI municipality has established a task team to audit care centres in a bid to prevent fatalities

Fire-related incidents have claimed more than 30 lives in two separate incidents in less than a year.

Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said institutions such as frail care centres, places of safety, early childhood development centres, including crèches and day care centres, and shelters for abused women must contact the municipality by August 5 to ensure they comply with safety requirements.

Non-complying centres will be granted 30 days to comply or face punitive measures, including closure.

"Our task team is busy conducting an audit of all known facilities. We are, however, appealing to members of the public to assist us in identifying (other) facilities."

In August last year 19 people died when the Pieter Wessels Home in Dunnottar caught fire. Twelve others lost their lives in a similar incident at the Struisbult Care Centre in Springs last month.

"We owe it to the memory of the 31 people we lost in fire-related incidents to do all in our power to prevent any more losses of life and property," said Dlamini.
