'Dealer forged signature of ANC official'

A CAR dealership in Kimberley has allegedly forged the signature of an ANC Northern Cape official to make it look like the provincial legislature had bought him a car.

A furore broke out earlier this year after it emerged that the legislature had bought a R600000 second-hand silver Mercedes-Benz ML320 which was then allegedly registered in ANC provincial secretary Zamani Saul's name, even though he is not a member of the provincial legislature.

However, a letter from Sol Plaatje's municipal manager Goolam Akharwaray has revealed that a staff member at Moto-Net - where the car was bought - deliberately deleted the Northern Cape provincial legislature as the buyer of the car, and inserted Saul's name instead.

According to Akharwaray, this happened because when a municipal official entered the organisation number (of the provincial legislature) into the e-NaTIS - National Traffic Information System - it reflected the name of Zamani Saul and so the car could not be registered.

The Moto-Net staff member then deleted the provincial legislature as the buyer and inserted Saul's name instead - and according to Akharwaray, also forged Saul's signature on the document.

"The incorrect registration is directly attributable to the actions of the dealer's agent .

"Both these matters are serious and relate to the submission of falsified documents, which can lead to criminal prosecutions.

"We regret the pain and suffering caused to you and the ANC," wrote Akharwaray in a letter that was handed yesterday to the provincial legislature's task team set up to investigate the matter.

But a representative of Moto-Net, who refused to be named because the company has hired a lawyer to deal with the matter, told Sowetan that nobody had forged Saul's signature and that the dealership always filled in registration forms for all the buyers.

Municipal spokesperson Sello Matsie confirmed that Akharwaray had written the letter, but said that was as far as his involvement went. Saul could not be reached for comment.

The Congress of the People, which blew the whistle on the alleged corruption, yesterday demanded that Akharwaray be summoned to testify before the task team.
