HIV testing at varsities begins

A CAMPAIGN aimed at encouraging voluntary HIV-Aids testing among first-year students kicks off today at the Mangosuthu University of Technology.

The campaign branded "First things first" is spearheaded by Innovative Medicine of South Africa in collaboration with the South African National Aids Council. It hopes to test more than 35000 students at all the country's 16 universities.

The council's spokesperson Junaid Seedat described first-year students as future leaders, saying that voluntary testing would give them guidance in taking correct decisions.

Although the campaign focuses on first-year students, he said it formed part of the government's objective to encourage more than 15million South Africans to get tested this year.

University spokesperson Bheki Hlophe said they were honoured to be involved in a campaign that encouraged students to make decisions.
